Safety Warning
  • Ensure equipment is properly isolated and locked out/tagged out
  • Verify zero energy state before beginning work
  • Use proper lifting equipment and techniques for heavy components
  • Be aware of potential hazardous material exposure from pump internals
Equipment Information
This SOP applies to the following equipment

Equipment Type

Centrifugal Pump

Applicable Models

Flowserve, Sulzer, KSB, Grundfos

1
Preparation and Isolation
Safely isolate and prepare the pump for maintenance
30-45 minutes
Tools: Lockout/tagout kit, Drain containment system, Work permits, Safety barriers

  • Obtain necessary work permits (hot work, confined space if applicable)
  • Isolate pump by closing suction and discharge valves
  • Lock out and tag out electrical power to pump motor
  • Depressurize and drain pump casing to safe containment
2
Disassembly
Systematically disassemble the pump for inspection
2-3 hours
Tools: Torque wrench, Bearing puller, Seal removal tools, Lifting equipment

  • Remove coupling guard and disconnect coupling
  • Remove bearing housing covers and extract bearings
  • Remove mechanical seal or packing gland
  • Remove casing bolts and separate pump casing from frame
3
Inspection
Thoroughly inspect all components for wear and damage
1-2 hours
Tools: Dial indicator, Micrometers, Inspection checklist, Digital camera

  • Measure and record shaft runout and bearing housing bore dimensions
  • Inspect impeller for erosion, corrosion, or damage
  • Check mechanical seal faces for wear or damage
  • Inspect casing for signs of erosion, corrosion, or cracking
4
Parts Replacement
Replace worn or damaged components
1-2 hours
Tools: Bearing installation tools, Seal installation tools, Torque wrench, Alignment tools

  • Replace bearings according to maintenance schedule or condition
  • Replace mechanical seal or packing as required
  • Replace worn wear rings or impeller if necessary
  • Replace gaskets and O-rings with new components
5
Reassembly
Carefully reassemble the pump in the correct sequence
2-3 hours
Tools: Torque wrench, Feeler gauges, Alignment tools, Lubricants

  • Install impeller and set proper clearances
  • Install mechanical seal according to manufacturer's instructions
  • Reassemble pump casing with new gaskets
  • Install and properly lubricate bearings
6
Alignment and Testing
Ensure proper alignment and test pump operation
1-2 hours
Tools: Laser alignment tool, Dial indicators, Vibration analyzer, Pressure gauges

  • Align pump and motor coupling to within specifications
  • Reconnect coupling and install coupling guard
  • Remove lockout/tagout devices and prepare for startup
  • Perform startup checks and monitor for proper operation
